Rolling on the River – Life Aboard a Shanty Boat
Living on a shanty boat might seem like a glamorous adventure from a Mark Twain novel but it was everyday life for thousands of river folks a century ago. Shanty boats existed on nearly every river and provided inexpensive housing for those less fortunate. They came in as many shapes and sizes as the builder’s imagination would allow. Simple, yet functional, these vessels were an important part of our inland river history. Join Bill Reynolds, Historian at the Ohio River Museum for an in depth look at life on a shanty boat.
