Definition: The most important aspects or practical details of a subject or situation
The Nitty Gritty Series explores the finer aspects of chosen exhibits in Campus Martius and The Ohio River Museums. Presenters who have a special interest in their chosen topic will share their stories and expertise with participants. This program is for adults. Students ages 12-18 must have parental supervision.
Our final installment of Nitty-Gritty programs features pioneer hand tools used for cutting, hewing and shaping timber for use on frontier homesteads. Participants will learn how trees were felled and prepared for building and carpentry projects with common hand tools of the settlers. Demonstrating the broad axe, adze, slick, chisels and saws Dan Hedges will give a primer on how these tools were used and some insight into basic joinery. Guests will be given the opportunity to try their hand with modern reproductions of the tools on display in Campus Martius Museum, as well as taking a turn on a hand built shaving horse.
