Join Mary Bird Lake and Rufus Putnam at Campus Martius Museum as they discuss the early years of the first permanent organized settlement in the NW Territory. What was it like for families to come here to settle? Establishing a new settlement in an uncharted wilderness was a challenge, even for a single young man. Bringing young children and extended families and starting over was an even greater challenge. Just creating a new life, in a new settlement, with all the comforts and traditions that people had grown to love and appreciate, took time. Plus, they were faced with many obstacles. Learn what some of the challenges were in creating a settlement that has survived over 230 years and how Mary Bird Lake and Rufus Putnam played crucial roles in this settlement.
